(More customer reviews)I needed a PC that would hold, edit and display images. Not only does this computer meet all my expectations, but it is fast, portable and lightweight. The screen is incredibly bright and I find the keyboard easy to navigate. The mouse was too sensitive for me, and with Windows 7 help, I rectified the problem. I have used various computers/operating systems/drivers for 35+ years and this Acer rises to the top for ease of use, speed and capacity. A long battery time is not a priority for me, but its portability is.

(More customer reviews)Portable USB hard drives are becoming a commodity, from numerous manufacturers. I've used several from SimpleTech, Western Digital, and now this Iomega entry.
Compared to the WD entries, this one is very slightly larger (not enough to make a difference in any context) and weighs about the same.
The USB cable included is a special Y-shaped one...the second USB connector can be plugged in to supply extra power in case your USB port does not provide sufficient power to spin up the drive. My laptop's USB port was able to power the drive without needing to use the second connector. I did have one issue with the documentation here, since it says that the power port is the one marked with a lightning bolt icon. Neither connector on my cable was marked, so I went to the Iomega support site and asked a rep (using an online chat function). He told me that the power connector was the one with the thinner wire, which was easily found when I knew what to look for.
I do actually prefer this type of cable over the single connection one (without the extra 'power' connector) that came with my WD drive, but that's just me being a geek. My personal geeky 'Holy Grail' has always been to find a way to transfer files between all of the USB stuff I carry without using a PC. I have, in my tote bag, a Media Player from Archos, an iPod, a Kindle eBook reader, several thumb drives, and occasionally a camera. All of these use USB for transferring files. No manufacturer has, as yet, developed a really good way to transfer data between them, or to/from a portable hard drive, without using a PC. I did actually manage to do it with this drive, plugging the power cable into a 'Tekkeon TekCharge Mobile Power and Battery Charger' and using a 'Memorex TravelLink' to host the transfer. I moved an mp4 from a thumb drive to the Iomega drive I was testing, just to see if I could do it. The transfer was agonizingly slow (I think the Memorex, which was developed in 2005 and I believe has been discontinued, uses USB 1.1 speed) but it did work and I was able to play the movie afterwords off the Iomega drive. So, it's doable with this configuration, but it's not pretty by any means. I wish someone would develop a better way to do this...
This drive is formatted for NTFS. For portable drives, I tend to prefer using FAT32 since even nowadays I occasionally run across a software or hardware interface that can't use NTFS. I went to Iomega's support site and did a search on FAT32, which led me to a downloadable application that easily reformatted the drive as I needed.
All in all, the drive is nice. It performed silently and quickly when plugged into my laptop and it's light enough to carry around. Given that it has a better (IMHO) cable than others, if the price is equivalent I'd buy this one without hesitation.

(More customer reviews)I just got this laptop a few days ago from amazon via overnight shipping (thanks amazon prime). I would give it 4.5 stars if amazon allowed it, but i'm going to round up to 5 stars because it is a great laptop for an awesome price.
To get the negative out of the way early, i wish the ec5801u had a backlit keyboard, but for only $600 i wouldn't expect it. A $10 usb light should fix this for the few times when i'll be using this in low light situations. The second gripe is that the lcd screen has a limited viewing angle. It is very nice from head on, but a bit faded to look at from a steeper angle, which may make it hard for multiple people to view the screen simultaneously.
I love the laptops looks, both opened and closed. The keyboard is fairly easy to type on and the track pad seems to work well, but I have a nice wireless mouse that i use most of the time thought. I'm an architect and cad work is much easier to do with a mouse. The battery life is killer and the on-board wireless has worked flawlessly so far.
The laptop starts up fairly quickly from a powered off state, and with the great battery life, it comes out of sleep mode super fast. After a first full charge, i installed a large number of big programs like autocad, photoshop, google's sketch-up, Open Office as well as number of print drivers and other software like pdf writers and itunes. Even though a lot of these programs were downloaded via wireless and then installed, the battery still had a ton of juice left in it. The hardware on board is powerful enough for me to do some light 3d modeling and rendering without any slowdowns yet.
Just an fyi, my ec5801u came with a 64-bit version of windows 7 on it, which i'm fine with, but some 32-bit software may not be compatible for you. The battery seems to stay cool, allowing this laptop to be kept on your lap.
To sum up, I love this laptop. It is not a desktop replacement but as a portable business tool, it is awesome. Amazon delivered quickly, as usual. I haven't had any problems with mine but will be sure to update this review if I do.

(More customer reviews)Purchased here (via J&R), great price on a bluray packing 15" laptop. 16:9 screen is great for watching movies. Screen looks great, watched Ratattouie (Pixar) DVD and The Bank Job bluray. Both movies looked great. Sound is Dolby Digital, and sounds great on headphones. Built in speakers sound terrible. Via even a cheap pair of headphones, the sound is superb. I heard sounds on Ratattouie that I never heard before.
Here's some good news: The HDMI port supports both video (duh) and Audio! Yay! When connecting the HDMI to my receiver, the ATI video driver popped up a warning that Audio is not supported. But clicking "help" opened a page basically saying that this is a generic message to warn users that a video card prior to Radeon 2xxx series does not support audio over HDMI, but anything later (including the one on this laptop, the 4200) DOES in fact support Audio. And a quick test (of those two movies) proved that it was Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. The included movie player from Acer sent 1080p and 5.1 sound out the HDMI, and it seems that MS Media player did too. So no additional software is needed to output to 5.1 with both BR and DVD. One final note on movie watching: The Acer movie player worked flawlessly, but when I tried MS Media Player, it stuttered often and was annoying. Figures. So stick with the included (and set as default player) Acer movie player.
Gaming is NOT recommended. I grabbed the first game disc I had lying around that I had both the disc AND the install key (always hard to find both when you need them), and it was Call of Duty World at War. It was awful. At the default 1024x768, it was an unplayable slide show, and at the lowest settings (640x480 and every possible feature set to low) it was still an unplayable 5-10 fps. So that was disappointing, but not a show stopper as we already have two high-end gaming computers in the house, and really what did I expect for under 6 Benjamins?
I purchased this primarily to have a portable Bluray playing laptop and it fits the bill perfectly. As of this writing (2/1/2010), it is the cheapest Bluray playing laptop on Earth (or that I could find anyway, and believe me I spent/wasted a lot of time searching!).
I have another 2-year old Acer Aspire, also a 15" widescreen, that is heavier with a worse keyboard than this model. I really am happy with the fit and finish of this model. The added keypad makes the keyboard sit left-of-center, which takes a little getting used to, as does the multi-touch touchpad, which is sensitive and hitting it accidently with a 2nd finger causes the mouse to jump around. The vertical scrolling feature on the right of the pad isn't very accurate (had the same problem on my older Acer). We use Toshiba laptops at work and their scrolling feature is definitely better.
Some other non-issues: not many stickers. Not much bloatware at all. Comes with MS Works SE, which DOES read and write word and excel files (you just can't set those as the default save/open option). Works SE is advertised based but it gives you the option to purchase the non-ad version. MS Office Student is 60 day trial. The 320GB drive is a single partition (yay!).
That's about it. A great deal on a bluray laptop that works great.

A screen with the resolution of the nicest 15 and even 16 inch laptops with a fraction of the weight, a dual-core processor nearly as capable (no problems watching high-def content streamed over the fast N wifi), and a keyboard that allows for comfortable typing all day long, which you can actually do considering the 6-hour battery life. I have no complaints whatsoever, and a few years ago, I would have considering paying 5x what this thing cost for the same overall package.
